1. Location
Sinaia Situated in breathtaking mountain scenery, Sinaia is located at 120 km distance from Bucharest, the Romanian capital city, and 49 km from Brasov, on the Prahova Valley. (Sinaia picture 1-overview).
Sinaia takes its name from the 17th-century monastery built by a Romanian nobleman after undertaking a pilgrimage to Mount Sinai, Egypt. (Sinaia Monastry picture)
Sinaia is one of the most famous and oldest mountain tourist resorts in Romania, known as “The Carpathian Pearl”. It is best known for being the summer residence of the former Romanian Royal family, the Peles Castle. (Peles Castle picture)
The mountain beauty can be explored in the summer and Sinaia is the best place to start your journey into the deep forest hiking trails. Bucegi Mountains’ hiking routes are well marked and signs are in good conditions. The hiking routes can be chosen for every taste, ranking from very easy to very difficult ones. In April these routes are mostly unavailable, due to weather. Still, one can explore the scenery by cablecar. In April, Sinaia can offer sometimes skiing opportunities, but at higher altitudes. The main air gateway to Romania is Henri Coanda International Airport, at 25km of Bucharest, the capital city. The distance to the city can be travelled by Bus for about 1 Euro, or by taxi for about 10 Euros.
The other airport is called Baneasa, is smaller and at 10 km from the city – right at the city border.
From Bucharest one can travel to Sinaia by train – one and half hour, or by car – one and half hour. For buses you have to find a local private bus-station. For this distance (120km) one can pay about 10 Euros by train or bus, and 150-200 Euros by taxi.
The main train station is “Gara de Nord” (in translation “The North Train Station”). The recommended trains are called Intercity, and are the most modern ones.
One can also rent a car at a price of about 50-60 Euro/day, and such services are offered right in the airport.
The currency in Romania is since 2005 RON (Leu/Lei). The exchange rate is about 3.5 Lei for 1 Euro, and 2.7 Lei for 1 USD. (http://www.xe.com/ucc). The old currency, still used for orientation, is ROL (also Leu/Lei). 1 RON = 10,000 ROL
